Cheese Straws

High Energy

A quick and easy recipe which will make people think differently about the way they eat and focuses on one or more of the following:

Achieving ‘five a day’; Using seasonal local ingredients; Trying something ordinarily not considered; Low in calories; Low in fat; High in energy; Substituting something which is ordinarily high calorie/fat with something healthier.

Good for:

 A tasty snack, high in energy

Cooking time:

 10-12 minutes

Portions:

 12-16 straws

Cost per person:

 17p approx

Ingredients:

8oz Plain Flour
1 teaspoon mustard powder
6oz Parmesan cheese
2oz margarine or butter
2 egg yolks
1-2 tablespoons water
1 vegetarian stock cube
Pepper to season

Method:

Put flour, pepper, mustard & stock cube in bowl, rub in margarine.
Add grated cheese with egg yolks & water. Leave some cheese for topping.
Roll & cut into finger shapes.
Cover tray with baking parchment & arrange on tray. Brush with egg white & top with cheese.
Bake at 200c oven for ten minutes.
Cool on a wire rack.
