Walking is one of the most natural exercises out there and is an excellent way to stay healthy, control your weight, keep happy, enjoy time with friends and family, learn more about your local area and even look after the environment!

You don't need any special equipment or training to get started and it's easy to make a few changes to your daily life to fit it in. Another big benefit of walking is that it's natural and easy on the body and, even if you're unfit, you can start slowly and build up gradually.

Virtually wherever you live, you don't have to travel far to do it and you can also help the environment and save on transport costs by walking at least part of the way to work, to the shops, to meet friends or by taking the kids to school on foot!

A decent pair of shoes will keep your feet happy when walking long distances but walking a bit more each day can be easily achieved in what you normally wear simply by adding a little more distance to your everyday routines.

Fitness level required 

For most people walking is a safe and effective form of exercise and you can start without checking with a doctor.

However, if you're very unfit, currently suffering with or recovering from a serious illness; or if you have any other concerns about your health, you should discuss this with your doctor before you get walking. It may be that you need to start more slowly and build up gradually.
